Assignment 8 English 102

Meggie Besaw

Assignment 8

This article had a lot of facts and things that backed up what it had to say. I think that’s why I loved this article so much. The article had more then 20 cites and what made it interesting was that they were all a bunch of different types of cites. (Brochure, articles, books, etic.) I think by it having so many different types of cites and so many cites in general it gave you a lot of different kinds of information and statistics. She used maybe only a sentence from some of the cites but sometimes that’s all her statements needed to back it up. I think one of the most interesting things is that some of the cites to back up the facts but are actual facts. “We build the romance design into everyone of our stores) (Ruzich, p. 432). That’s a fact from the starbucks brochure stating that how they build their store instead of show statistically showing you how they build their store. “We wanted to introduce them to fine coffee the way wine sturdiest introduce fine wine.” This is another example of how this citation explains how they wanted their coffee to be and for what type of people. Its not backing up a statistic it’s a fact but not just a fact it then has an example of what they mean by comparing fine wine with their coffee. I think a lot of people think that citing and researching things are to just back up what their idea of the topic is, but in all reality you can use it as the facts. I also think that people don’t cite enough things and have the same opinion from the same book or article but having a variety of articles gives your paper a variety of opinions and gives you more facts and things that can back up your paper.

Assignment 7 English 102

Meggie Besaw
English 102
Assignment 7

Perspective is your viewpoint of something, your personal idea about a certain subject or event. You hear the word perspective a lot in class when the teacher wants your perspective on a book or a subject you are talking about. Another big place you hear perspective is at work, they need your perspective on the new fall line of clothes or the new box cover for Pepsi.  When somebody asks you your perspective it’s the time where you get to express your feeling about something. I think perspective is an important word for English 102 because when writing a research paper you have to write about the entire topic the good and the bad no matter what your personal perspective is about that topic. That doesn’t mean after giving out both sides of facts that you cant add a little of your perspective. I think you just have to be careful and not add to much of that because it’s a paper that helps people understand the topic with facts not a personal paper about your view on the topic.
I realized after watching 60 minutes that sometimes T.V creates your perspective on the issue. After talking about the 60 minutes my perspective completely changed because T.V has a way to show you their perspective and only their side. The show didn’t have enough evidence or back up to support her problem but it’s a sad problem and the show has a way to make you feel bad and makes you want to believe her.
In my research paper the story I’m telling is how a past relationship can change your view on love? Negative Relationships, Positive relationships and, Homosexual relationships, and now those are change your perspective on future relationships. After people would read my research paper they can have they’re own perspective on what they read. I think it’s important to show everything not just things I agree with so that everybody’s perspectives are based off of all true facts and all true situations. I've included one of the two couples being controlling, abusive, and cheating for the negative. For the positive it isnt specific behaviors but studies on how they act towards each other changes their view on love. I used caring. supportive, and loving.   When writing this paper i used all different ages from 10 to old adults. I think its important to understand all ages and what ages strongly change your view on love.  I used a lot of sociology and psychology statistics to show why and how all of those aspects contribute to peoples future. My main point is that you give your readers all the aspects (age, positive negative, homosexual, heterosexual) so that their perspective is based off of everything.

English 102 Assignment 7

Assignment 7

How do past relationships change peoples views on love?

Keith G. Schrag. Relationship Therapy with Same-Gender Couples
Family Relations, Vol. 33, No. 2 (Apr., 1984), pp. 283-291.

In this article it talks about how homosexual relationships and the affects it has on them in the future with future relationships and in life in general. I think it’s a perfect article to use for a source because I think it’s important to compare all types of relationships. The article concludes that a lot of therapists use to not have therapy for same sex couples, and explains how now therapists are more open too that and it explains how the relationships have changed from when they couldn’t talk to a therapist to now when they can.

Bryan E. Robinson, Patsy Skeen, Carol Flake Hobson and Margaret Herrman. Gay Men's and Women's Perceptions of Early Family Life and Their Relationships with Parents. Family Relations, Vol. 31, No. 1 (Jan., 1982), pp. 79-83.
As you read this article it talks about how three fourths of homosexuals parents accept their homosexuality and shows how when they do accept how that affects their relationship and when they don’t how that affects their relationship with their significant other. I could use this because it shows how family can affect a relationship

Jan E. Stets. Modelling Control in Relationships. Journal of Marriage and Family , Vol. 57, No. 2 (May, 1995), pp. 489-501.

The article talks about how one-partner controls the other. Not only does that change a persons view on love but also on that relationship. Its conclusion is how a lot of the time the person who is being controlled doesn’t realize that and think its normal until they get out of the relationship. I think its really important to use some main ideas of a reason why peoples view on love changes good or bad and I think modeling control is a big factor.

Miriam R. Hill and Philip M. Mamalakis. Family Therapists and Religious Communities: Negotiating Dual Relationships. Family Relations, Vol. 50, No. 3 (Jul., 2001), pp. 199-208.

When reading this article it explains how when trying to find a relationship a big factor in that is religion. It explains how that either holds you back from starting a relationship or changes your view on love. Sometimes when meeting somebody and falling in love with them you are willing to change or compromise on relationship, but sometimes no matter how much the love that person they will leave. I think this is another big factor on how it changes their view on love if they change their relationship or even if they don’t.

J. Mark Halstead. Teaching about Love British Journal of Educational Studies, Vol. 53, No. 3, Values, Ethics and Character in Education (Sep., 2005), pp. 290-305.

This article talks about children’s ways of thinking about love. It talks about why and how different children think about love. I think it’s a really good article to use because it’s when it starts 9-10 when children start to think about love. All my articles so far are on young adults or adults so I think its good to add a little bit about when it all started.

Jerold Heiss. Gender and Romantic-Love Roles. The Sociological Quarterly Vol. 32, No. 4 (Winter, 1991), pp. 575-591 (article consists of 17 pages)

This article talks about the different roles on love. It talks about the different ways boys act and their view on loves and the different ways girls act and their views on love. I think this is a really great article to use because it has a lot of statistics I can use in my paper to back up my thoughts and things I found and learned about m

Jennifer Manlove, Suzzane Ryan and Kerry Franzetta
Gender and the Meanings of Adolescent Romantic Relationships: A Focus on Boys, Vol. 44, No. 3 (Aug., 2007), pp. 603-621

When writing my research paper I think its good to look at both sides of a relationship, the boy’s side and girls. This article explains how boys act in relationships and how relationships affect boys. This article doesn’t come up with a conclusion but with ways the norm ways boys act towards girls in a relationship. Not only do they explain how they act but why they act like that. I want to write how boys act in a relationship and then how girls act positive and negative and how that affects their relationships in the future. So by reading this article I learn the boys aspect of my paper.

John H. Harvey and Brian G. Pauwels Recent Developments in Close-Relationships Theory. Current Directions in Psychological Science
Vol. 8, No. 3 (Jun., 1999), pp. 93-95

While looking at the boy aspect and the girl aspect on a relationship I think you need to look from teens to adults. This article looks more on adult and marriage. It gives you a look at statistics on good relationships and bad relationships, and shows you how those relationships can change your view on love. It also shows you statistics of divorce rates and depending on the relationship how it shapes your next relationship. The article concludes with what a marriage and how a marriage affects a women and male. This would work perfectly into my paper because I want to show how relationships affect women and men and I think that it is important to not only show young adult love but also adult love.

Peggy C. Giordano. Relationships in Adolescence.
Annual Review of Sociology , Vol. 29, (2003), pp. 257-281

This article shows the distinct meaning and significance young adult a relationship has on developing adolescents. It explains why it’s important for young adults to have a relationship and the ways it affects them in the future, not only in their future relationships but life in general. I think it’s the perfect article to explain how relationships affect young adults future and the reasons it affects their future like that.

Wyndol Furman
Current Directions in Psychological Science
Vol. 11, No. 5 (Oct., 2002), pp. 177-180
(article consists of 4 pages)

I think the source is very useful for my paper.  It talks about adolescent relationships and how they are important and positive but also can be negative.  The article talks about how relationships have blossomed more and more through out the years. Although it doesn’t explain how past relationships change your view on love, it does explain relationships and how they affect you. I think that would be a good way to ease into my paper.

English 102 Assignment 5

Meggie Besaw
English 102
Assignment 5

I decided to come up with two completely different questions then some of the others I jotted down before. It was really hard for me to come up with good questions for my research paper but last class really helped me. I never knew a question could matter so much but i realized it’s the base of your paper and what you go off of. You have to make sure the question has a lot of meat to it, a question that you can write a lot about and something you yourself are interested in. The two questions I was left with were. "Are there different ways students can live a healthier lifestyle?" And "How can past relationships change your view on love?” I am more interested in the second question and would much rather do that one but the first question i think might be better for this class. I think it has more solid facts and information that can back the question up where the second question may be more of an opinion. If my heart is set on the second question i think that some how i can change it a little so that it is a more solid based question and has more solid facts that can back up the question. Compared to my questions from the assignment a while ago i think I've made some progress and i also understand what kind of questions we are looking for.
The source I used was the UWM online library article search. I looked up "past relationships and love" under sociology. I got a variety of different types of articles. I found love on different cultures, ages, and I found a really great article that would work awesome for my paper. It was on love and how the positive ways it affects you but also the negative ways. It explains different reason why you feel the way you do about love.
I'd use this source because not only does it have one article but also several articles love but they all are a little different and most go a long with the topic I'm trying to get at in my research paper. I defiantly will be looking into the library books and online sources because they are easy to cite look at and i feel more confident about the information they state.

Assignment 4B English 102

Meggie Besaw
Assignment 4B
English 102
After searching some questions about social work I found out you have to use pretty specific words to get the right article.  The questions I used in my last assignment were too much of interview questions and to hard get articles for and specific words. “ Why does underage drinking happen?” I would use underage and drinking. I got a lot of good articles but I also think its because it is a very popular topic. It’s really hard for me to use questions that aren’t more like interview questions because those are the ones I’m used to using.
I never used databases in my high school web page because I didn’t know how to use them. After learning about the new databases I can use I’m really excited! I use goggle a lot and you can never be sure the information they are giving you is correct. The database on the UWM library link is easier to use and gives you more information. Going to the Library is going to help me a lot with my paper but also help me find questions that will help me get started on my paper.

Assignment 4 English 102

Meggie Besaw
Assignment 4
English 102

Questions I think can be very helpful but also can be useless if you don’t ask a question the right way. If you are looking to get a lot of feed back about your question you cannot ask a yes or no question those are the type of questions that will give you the least inquiry. I find asking why after your question tends to give you more of an answer to your question.  The more in depth your question is the better answer you’ll get out of them. When I think of questions I think of interviewing so if you are interviewing somebody about a topic talk to them like a person and make them feel comfortable.

1.     What sort of joy do you get out of working in a children’s hospital as a social worker?
2.     What is the hardest part about working with sick children?
3.     What sort of things do you do while working there?
4.     What type of degree do you need in social work to work in a children’s hospital? What degree would you encourage me to get?
5.     Why do Sick children need a social worker?
6.     Do you work with the kids more or more with the families/parents?  What sort of things do you do with them?
7.     How do you not get to attached to the children/families?
8.     What sort of team do you work with in the hospital?
9.     Why would you suggest this job to somebody?

Assignment 3 English 103

Meggie Besaw
Assignment 3
English 102

Bill Bryson Is a best selling author. He would write humorous books and books on traveling to science and English language. I think he has a very broad audience, people who are into amusing books can read his stuff and then people who are interested in a more serious learning book can read his work. I found At Home “Introduction” to be really interesting and made me think pretty deep about the things he said, all the whys and what ifs and from what I looked up about him the essay didn’t go along with his writing themes.
After reading The Kitchen I found it interesting for only so many pages. It had a lot of information and was well addressed for a research paper but it was the same thing every other page just different food. I loved how it started off with a story I found that unique and more alternative then traditional, it made me want to read more about it. I don’t think that this fits one hundred percent in our academic model but I think it had traits that fit into it. It had a lot of information and the information was backed up. The story that drew me into wanting to read more in the first paragraph was a unique just like we talked about in class on Tuesday. Although it had a few things I think this class is looking for in a research paper I think that the essay had more traditional ways then alternative. I don’t think we are cutting out traditional completely because I think we need some traditional in a research paper to structure it I do think though that this essay had too much traditional and to much repetition with different types of food.
Inquiry to me is when you analyze, look up, and find out about a topic. I think the essay had a lot of that and I think that is very important when writing a paper. The most important think I think about inquiry is when you look up and find out about that topic that you statistics and certain things to back that up. “Because bread was so important, the laws governing it purity were strict and the punishment severe. A baker her cheated his customers were fined 10 per loaf sold, or made to do a months hard labor in prison”(The Kitchen, 68). That quote would be a prime example of inquiry. He learned about a topic even backed it up with what would happen. The only thing I’d change is find some hard evidence.
